Assistance for passengers with special requirements: Autism

Aena is fulfilling its commitment to contribute to create a more friendly and inclusive environment for all passengers, especially for the most vulnerable groups, particularly the group of people with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD).

Some airports such as Málaga-Costa del Sol or César Manrique-Lanzarote, have carried out specific initiatives aiming at making it easier for ASD people to pass through the airport and making their stay as comfortable as possible.

In 2019 , in order to make progress in this matter and meet the accessibility needs of ADS people and their families, Aena signed a collaboration agreement with the Confederación Autismo España (Spanish Confederation of Autism).

Use of premises

Spaces for solidarity

Over 20 airports place at the disposal of the social entities spaces for solidarity; confined areas, specially dedicated to raising awareness of social problems.

Exhibition areas

Some of the Aena airports have enabled specific terminal areas, museums and cultural spaces to exhibit works of art, either permanent or temporary.

Institutional campaigns

Aena places at the disposal of Public Institutions and Foundations some of its means of communication -such as SIPAS and airport screens- to share messages of social impact. In this regard, and as an example, in 2019 Aena launched the campaign organized by the Asociación Española contra el Cáncer (Spanish Association Against Cancer) at its airports on the occasion of the world cancer day, and also the campaign by the Confederación Autismo España (Spanish Confederation of Autism) on the World Autism Awareness Day.

Internal communication channels

The company’s main focus is to improve communication with employees, find out which are their needs and address them. To do so, Aena provides its employees various channels to promote ongoing dialogue. Among them, the corporate intranet, which in 2019 renewed its image and accessibility; fifty internal bulletins (“Aena 360º”) published, which have also echoed the social reality with over 120 news; dedicated e-mail addresses, etc.

Moreover, it is worth mentioning that, as a new feature, new initiatives have been launched to improve communication with employees, such as the “News of the day”, and the use of panels to convey key messages.

Toy libraries and spaces for children

Some airports have toy libraries for the youngest passengers. These dedicated areas have training games for children but also high chairs, bath tubs for babies, rest rooms with cradles, breast feeding rooms, among others. As an example, in 2019, The toy library of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport accommodated more than 30,400 children.

Event celebrations

Charity markets

It has become a tradition for Aena to organise events of solidarity and charity markets so that the social entities can sell fair trade products. In 2019 these events have been carried out at airports and the Aena corporate headquarters.

National and international commemorations

The company joins national and international commemorations through a variety of initiatives throughout the year, where values in line with those of Aena are defended and promoted.

For example, in 2019, Aena developed and participated in activities on the occasion of International Women and Girls in Science Day; International Women’s Day; International Dance Day; International Book Day; International Music Day; International Day for the Elderly; International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Visits and open days

Airports are also visited by people who wish to take a close look at their facilities. To that end, the company has designed specific tours adjusted to the different visitor profiles -technicians, students, children, general public. Thanks to this guided tour program, the airport Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas, for example, was visited by 8,355 people during 2019. In turn, the airport Federico García Lorca (FGL) Granada-Jaén ended the 2028-2019 visits schedule for schools with a record 1,960 pupils of 40 schools of Granada and Jaén, which is the highest number of visits the airport has ever had.

Moreover many airports have aeronautic spaces and museums open to the public and which are highly visited. Among them the Aeronautic Museum of the César Manrique-Lanzarote airport which in 2019 was visited by 6,166 people from 46 different countries. This amount represents an increase of 18.7% compared to 2018, achieving its highest total ever.

Humanitarian aid

Through this programme airports, in collaboration with local associations, facilitate the arrival and return of Saharan children in Summer. The Málaga-Costa del Sol airport, for instance, has been collaborating with the Federación Andaluza de Asociaciones Solidarias con el Sáhara ( Andalusian Federation of Sahara Solidarity associations) and the Asociaciones de Amistad con el Pueblo Saharaui (Frendship Associations with Saharan People) for more than 20 years making it easier for over 900 children to arrive. In turn, more than 740 Saharan children have arrived to the airports of Alicante-Elche and Gran Canaria.

This is how Aena is contributing to offer these children the chance to enjoy the comforts they do not have at the refugee camps where they live, apart from a healthy diet and appropriate medical attention
